According to a May 5 news release from Howard Brown Health, the Chicago area is experiencing a rebound in Mpox Cases, which are at their highest level since November and have the highest weekly case rate in the country.
Since April 17, the agency, which supports the LGBTQ+ community, has confirmed seven cases, with the results of further tests still pending. It went on to say that the Chicago Department of Public Health had only reported one Mpox case in the previous three months.
Patrick Gibbons, DO, Howard Brown’s chief medical director, said, “We urge sexually active members of our community to receive the Mpox vaccine. For example, unvaccinated people planning to attend International Mr. Leather at the end of May should receive their first dose of the Mpox vaccination as soon as possible.” He added that increased vaccination rates will better protect the community from another outbreak.
Concerns about the global comeback
Following last year’s international pandemic, Mpox cases fell precipitously over the winter months. The World Health Organization maintained Mpox as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) in February, citing continued transmission in some countries, undetected transmission and under-reporting in others, and concerns about a possible resurgence when social events and other mass gatherings resume.
Other nations have reported increases in Mpox activity, including a cluster in France and South Korea, where officials increased the alert level from 1 to 2 last month.
