How Can Contaminated Soil Increase Indoor Lead Exposure?
Lead contamination in soil may pose a significant indoor health risk when contaminated particles are carried into residential environments. A study from the Rutgers Environmental, Occupational and Health Sciences Institute, conducted with community scientists from the East Trenton Collaborative, found that contaminated outdoor soil can contribute to hazardous levels of indoor lead dust.
Researchers collected 242 bare-surface soil samples from 122 homes in East Trenton, a neighborhood where historical pottery manufacturing contributed to widespread soil contamination. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) added the area to the Superfund National Priorities List in 2025.
Among the samples, 86% exceeded the EPA’s residential soil lead hazard level of 200 parts per million, while nearly 94% exceeded screening levels associated with multiple potential sources of lead exposure.
These findings are particularly relevant for pediatric and public health professionals because surface soil can be readily accessed by children or transported indoors through footwear, clothing, and household activity.
Indoor Lead Dust May Persist Without Lead-Based Paint
The researchers also examined indoor dust in 42 homes, collecting samples from floors, windowsills, and window wells. In homes without interior lead-based paint, 80% of floor dust samples exceeded the safety threshold.
Importantly, researchers found no significant difference in indoor floor lead levels between homes with and without lead-based paint. This finding suggests that soil tracking can be an important source of indoor lead dust, challenging the assumption that lead exposure primarily originates from deteriorating paint in older homes.
Lead exposure remains a major environmental health concern, particularly for children. According to the EPA, lead poisoning can interfere with brain development and cause neurological, behavioral, and organ damage.
Community Science Strengthens Environmental Health Research on Lead Exposure
The study also highlights the value of community participation in identifying environmental lead exposure. Rutgers researchers trained residents to collect soil samples, helping investigators obtain environmental data from homes that might otherwise have been difficult to access.
The research builds on an earlier collaboration involving community scientists and lead contamination in household water. Together, these projects demonstrate how partnerships between researchers and residents can identify localized environmental hazards and support more targeted public health interventions.
